My Decision To Face My Fears!

by Paul Castain on April 29, 2012

Back in 2010 I set a goal to start utilizing video in my “Castain 2.0” branding strategy and guess what?

I completely wussed out!

I put it off, blew it off and always had really good reasons for not getting to it.

Bottom line . . . I was scared folks!

I was scared of all the things I would have to learn in order to do it the way I wanted to do it.

I had no clue where to start with the software, the proper video camera and microphones and quite frankly it was overwhelming to me.

I feel like such an ass admitting this but I really was scared of it because it required me to move outside my writing and podcasting comfort zones . . .

Where I had already been accepted by my Sales Playbook community!

Then one day, I had enough of the proverbial “thousand deaths” thing and decided to head butt this fear as I have done with other fears.

I made the first video in the fall and then guess what happened?

I wussed out again for about 6 months!

The good news is that I was aware that I was going right back to my avoidance thing so I decided to not only create a video schedule, I decided to start shooting videos for the various services pages I have up on my website.

Here’s my latest video promoting my Presenting Your Solutions With IMPACT webinar but before you watch it, I want to share something with you.

I’m still not that comfortable with video yet, but with each new video, I’m honing my skills.

One last thing . . .

When I shot this video the other day a very strong sense of perspective came over me.

I realized that the webinar I was promoting had to do with presentation skills . . . something that I was deathly afraid of 14 years ago.

I faced that fear and I kicked its ass.

Not overnight and not without a few battle scars but . . .

14 years later a substantial part of my income is generated from giving keynote addresses at sales conventions. Go figure!

The funny thing is that my intentions at the time were to simply conquer my fear of public speaking!

Truth be told, we never know what doors a conquered fear might open!

At the very least . . . it creates new muscle groups to enable us to rise to the next challenge.

Before you watch the video, when was the last time you looked deep within your soul and identified the things that scare you?

More importantly, when was the last time you faced them and took action?

These questions are not asked from a snooty “I’ve got my act together” perspective . . . They’re asked with respect from someone who has found too much solace in simply not “dealing”.

I hope you’ll join us for our webinar this week Presenting Your Solutions With IMPACT. Click the Big Red Button for more info. Can’t make it? No worries, we are recording the webinar. Watch it at your leisure!

Thanks Paul. Only today I was talking with my partner about my fear – picking up the phone and calling prospects. I’ve decided to follow the advice of another blogger who’s article I read today – make a to-do list and delgate 50% of it to someone else. I’m delegating that task to my sales expert partner, because he’s good at it and loves it. I will listen to the way he does it and maybe I’ll give it a try. No promises though! Still, well done on facing your fear, you’re quite right when you say that new opportunities arise from doing just that.

Great one, fears come in many shapes and sizes…for the first time in a long time I conquered a personal fear of heights.  I was in Palm Desert last week and took a tram 8,500 feet (yes that is a 1 1/2 miles) up a mountain to see the view.  Absolutely worth it!!! would I do it again, yes!!! did it kill me…no, I loved doing it!!

OK, that said, roller coasters won’t be conquered in this lifetime :-)

You bring up a really important point Vanessa . . . Do we really even need to face the fear?

Facing a fear for the sake of facing it is useless if its something we can easily delegate.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Thanks Paul, a great read.  It is a funny thing Fear,
it took the actions of my 8 year old daughter to give me back my perspective on
things just last week.  She tackled a task (climbing 30ft in the air then
jumping off to catch a pole 4 ft away), yes she was afraid, but the
determination to do it was immense, I watched in awe and realised if i had
attacked my career and my goals with such ferocity…  Only fear had held
me back.  Watching her I realised, probably not for the first time that i
had to face my current fears and like her give it my all, if I fail get up and
    try again….

Great Post! We all have fears that we have to face, even if others might think these fears are unwarranted. Big or small, trivial or not, overcoming fears can be a major challenge. Persistence & determination are paramount if as you are to, as you so eloquently put it, face that fear and kicked its ass! Love the video aspects! Keep it up!

Great video and message Paul. I’m sending this to my wife because we’ve talked about videos for her dog grooming videos for almost a year now :)
