An Email Tactic That Needs To Go

There’s an email tactic that absolutely gets under my skin.

It’s typical.

It’s annoying and

You will almost certainly condition the recipient NOT to open your emails in the future.

Ready?

It’s forwarding the email you sent with another note and as if that wasn’t lame enough;

Forwarding it again with another note.

Now just because you put a note in the forwarded message the first time, that reads “Just circling back to get your thoughts on this” and then forward it again with a different note that reads “I know you’re busy so I wanted to reach out again to _______” doesn’t change the fact that;

You just sent the SAME EMAIL 3 times.

Here’s the point;

If someone doesn’t respond to your first email;

Try a different email

Pick up the damn phone

Try something creative

Reach out to them on a social network

Send them a FedEx or something via snail mail

Stop by

But; for the love of God;

Do Something DIFFERENT!

And think about what you’re really doing when you continue to forward a message that wasn’t responded to;

You’re telling a potential client that you’re incapable of helping them find creative solutions to their challenges; because you can’t even find one for yours!

My suggestion would be to create a communication map of what your typical communication will look like with your potential customers.

Think it out in advance and vary the forms of outreach you will leverage and;

Decide how long you will wait between attempts.

Example:

Touch #1: Intro email. If no response then 2 two days later;

Touch #2: Intro call #1 or Intro Voicemail #1 If I connect but they turn me down, then handwritten thank you. If I leave a voicemail and no return call then 1 day later

Touch #3 Fed Ex or snail mail. If no reply 1 week later

Touch #4 Email with short,  embedded video, calling potential client by name. At the end of the video tell them a specific day and time you will call them.

Touch #5 Call them. If voicemail then  Voicemail #2 then wait 3 days

Touch #6 Send a useful resource to them

Get the idea?

The point is to move away from forwarding the same email, over and over!
