Kind of sounds like I may have gone off the deep there huh? I mean how dare I disagree with the golden rule like that.
Having said that, I’m going to stand my ground firmly and tell you that I would never treat you as I would want to be treated.
Why?
Because it’s how I want to be treated and not necessarily how YOU want to be treated.
I like to be treated in a manner that skips all foreplay and we get to the point rather quickly. I like blunt people, I love tough love and I despise people who over complicate things.
But that’s me and it would be pretty foolish of me to assume that you’d like to be treated that way too.
What if you’re a person who loves facts, figures, excel spreadsheets and the history of the world in triplicate? Try selling someone that way who is more casual. Their eyes are going to glaze over and they are going off on an outer body experience.
What if you’re a real “warm & fuzzy”, huggy, sensitive type. Pull that on someone like a Donald Trump and you will disconnect every time and speaking of disconnect;
The same holds true in how we reach out to others.
I prefer email but if I only cling to email in reaching out to you and you’re all about Twitter. I lose. By the way, I just brought in a new coaching client and he preferred to communicate via direct message on Twitter. Imagine if I only dealt with the guy the way I wanted to be dealt with?
I could go on and on, but here’s the point . . .
When it comes to morality and ethics, by all means embrace the Golden Rule but;
When it comes to truly connecting with others . . .
Do unto others the way THEY want to be done unto.
There’s a great book on this concept called The Platinum Rule.
