Today I turned 49 and I have to admit, I’ve been a bit introspective lately.
I could blame it on my birthday, or the bigger one next year (that seems to be smiling and giving me the finger as you read this).
I could also blame it on the week that has another one of my children graduating High School.
Who knows? Who cares but the point is, I’ve been thinking a lot about my life lately and how unhappy I was on my birthday in 2010! I know, “Who the hell thinks about sad stuff like that on their birthday?”
Nothing tragic happened to me but I was miserable and quite depressed and I didn’t know why.
So I began slowing down enough to go out to the patio after dinner and have some quite “thinking time” each day.
Little by little, I began to understand why I was so depressed. I had this urgency to something, but I had no idea what. I felt like I should be doing more with my life, but had no clue what. I was making the bucks but not loving what I was doing and then . . .
Later that year my wife Laura was diagnosed with breast cancer!
We were fortunate enough to have caught it at “Stage 0” and she is fine today, but it delivered a very serious message to me that changed my thinking.
It reminded me, again, that while we may think we’re on the 85 or 90 or (who knows) the 100 year plan, our creator might have a different one.
So at the worst possible time in my life, I gave my notice and walked away from my role as a VP in a billion dollar corporation.
It was an absolutely insane move because . . .
I was 1 year out from having to write the first tuition check, 3 years out from having to write two checks, for two kids, in college not to mention medical bills! Oh, and a lot of luxuries had to go to help fund my start up.
But something happened in the process that couldn’t be measured in dollars . . .
I found joy and for once, I’m really enjoying the ride!
And that brings us to something that I finally realized during my most recent, trip around the sun;
48 years went by in a flash.
Statistically speaking, there’s a good chance that I’ll be taking my dirt nap somewhere in the next 48 years but;
I’m simply having too much fun to care!
And that’s my biggest regret folks, that I didn’t get to this place sooner but,
Maybe YOU can!
So find your joy
Enjoy your life and by all means . . .
Stop taking this so seriously!
