Negotiations Start Long BEFORE The Actual Negotiation

When I was a VP for a major printing company, I was looking into assessments for our sales force.

There was one that stood high above the other companies and it was approximately $250.

I would have gladly paid it too but instead;

I ended up paying about $25 each.

That wasn’t a typo;

I paid only 10% of their asking price.

And sorry to be a jerk, but the sales rep made it really easy for me to talk him down!

Because every time I talked with him during the courtship, he tried all these ridiculous closing techniques, to get me to buy NOW.

At the end of every month he had a new offer that blew away last month’s offer and;

Quite frankly he appeared desperate!

So I waited and;

I waited, and let him talk himself down and then;

I talked him down further.

To him I had the leverage because I was buying for approximately 850 sales reps but;

He actually had the leverage because he had something I desperately needed for my team but;

He was too busy being desperate and trying aggressively to close me that;

He never stopped long enough to realize it!

I learned then that;

Negotiations actually begin LONG BEFORE the actual negotiation.
