Now would be a splendid time to go and read something warm and fuzzy instead.
Consider yourself forewarned, because I’m going to be extremely blunt, and there’s a good chance that you are going to be offended.
Here goes;
Many of you work for companies that won’t reimburse you for webinars, coaching, books, etc.
I totally agree with you that it’s cheap and shortsighted, but;
It doesn’t let you off the hook with what should be a commitment to invest in yourself!
Your boss shouldn’t want YOUR success more than YOU!
“Says the guy who sells sales training for a living”
That’s an actual response I received on Twitter yesterday when I expressed my opinion on this.
My response;
“Says your mum!”
I responded to him that way because he’s a bit of a dick, he’s from the UK, and I always wanted to say “mum”, but seriously;
Actually, says the guy who knew enough to invest in himself, long before he sold sales training, and;
Even when he was piss poor!
Newsflash:
You can get a book on Amazon for under $15, but;
Many refuse to drop $15;
Because their boss won’t reimburse them.
But meanwhile;
They have no problem supporting their $5+ per Starbucks habit.
Going out to lunch several times per week.
And you have to have that monthly gym membership.
Going out to dinner several times a month.
Buying the latest gadgets.
Supporting their vices (I support a $100 a month cigar habit)
Here’s how I approach my craft;
For almost 25 years now, I’ve always reinvested a portion of my commissions in the surest investment on the planet;
ME!
Some months it was that $15 book.
Other times its been courses, conferences, and coaching, and;
The investment has paid HUGE dividends.
And don’t get me wrong;
If you’re financially struggling, keep this post in mind for when you’re back on your feet, but;
If you refuse to invest in yourself because the boss WON’T, and meanwhile;
You choose to piss your money on trivial things;
