An Estimated 17.5 Million Americans Will Call In “Sick” Today!

According to a recent survey conducted by The Workforce Institute at Kronos;

17.5 million Americans plan on calling in sick today;

You know, because its the day after the Super Bowl and a high holy American football holiday or something.

Looking at the amount of beer and food I consumed last night, I probably should have given myself the day off but then again;

I enjoy leveraging opportunities!

Like opportunities to change up our messaging and take a brief intermission from the typical “sales” message.

So whenever I have a holiday, I look at how I can leverage that holiday.

Like Groundhog day for example.

Not exactly major holiday, right?

Well I did a blog post about the movie Groundhog day and how the main character (Bill Murray) kept reliving the same day over and over again and;

I leveraged that as a way of reminding sales reps how we tend to do that in sales.

That blog post brought in a lot of business for me so;

I began contacting my LinkedIn network with a simple note and a link to that blog post;

Even more business rolled in.

So I used a holiday (and a movie about a holiday) to illustrate a point and make a few sales.

Last year, I used the same tactic with sales leadership.

I called potential clients and decided to leverage “Super Sick Monday” (the day after the Super Bowl) to change up the conversation.

I simply asked;

“How many of your teammates are out sick today due to the devastating effects of the Super Bowl?”

It created a laugh and a segue into a conversation.

Conversations that didn’t exist before.

One of my sales coaching clients had a lot of fun asking people;

“Obviously Super Bowl Sunday was yesterday and you know I have to ask (brief pause);

What kind of food did you serve?”

We can expand this to holidays, seasons, and events.

A few examples to consider;

At year end many companies are not only working on their budgets for next year, they’re trying to stretch what’s left in their existing budget.

There’s also a loss of productivity with the holidays.

At the beginning of each year, there’s a need to fill a few more jobs as its a common time for employees to move on to “greener pastures”.

There’s tax season.

As the weather warms up, people are focused on home improvements.

There are industry events that take place at certain times of the year.

One of my clients changes their messaging over the summer to talk about how “Hackers don’t take vacations.”

Cintas uses “seasonal messaging” by preparing themed kits that they drop off with their potential clients.

I’ve seen examples where they dropped things off for Football season, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Mardi Gras, Spring, etc.

Any time there’s a heat wave, I’ve sent ice cream to some of the larger accounts I’m pursuing.

Holidays and the different seasons are great opportunities to change things up because;

You can’t possibly “court” a potential client by having the same conversation over and over again!

In what ways can YOU leverage holidays, seasons, and events to change up your messaging?
