Awful Phone Scripts

Having trained over 25,000 sales reps worldwide;

I’ve seen (and heard) all kinds of phone scripts ranging from show stopping incredible to;

So awful the caller should have put everyone out of their misery by hanging up on them self!

Want to know what constitutes an AWFUL phone script?

It’s any script that leads with ANYTHING that is irrelevant to the recipient and;

Unfortunately that’s what the majority of sales reps do!

Whenever you immediately start talking about your company, your value prop, solution, even social proof statements about those you’ve helped;

It isn’t something that the recipient cares about, yet!

For a while now, I’ve offered a simple solution that works with ANY prospecting vehicle (phone, email, LinkedIn, snail mail, etc)

Ready?

Oh, and you’re not allowed to roll your eyes and tell me I’ve written about this dozens of times if you aren’t actually doing it!

Use your research to lead with something relevant to the recipient, ideally a trigger event!

Whenever I’m able to find something during my research, I lead with;

“I noticed that (fill in the blank with something you noticed)”

If a trigger event for you is a product launch;

“Hi John,

I noticed that you’re launching the TPS Reportinator II next month”

You don’t have to always use that phrase.

If you noticed a blog post where it seemed like a cry for help;

“Hi John,

I enjoyed your company’s blog post today titled “Why we hate our sh*tty sales training program”

When you lead with things people care about (hint: it isn’t you, your company, or your solution) people tend to listen!

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but;

When people are listening they aren’t objecting and ushering you off their phone!

So whether you use an actual phone script, a bulleted outline, or a mental framework;

ALWAYS lead with the recipient’s world!
