25 Things Most People Forget To Include In Their “New Year’s Resolutions”

Posted January 2, 2019

There are things that are absolutely beaten to death when it comes to New Year’s goals and resolutions.

And then there are the things that nobody talks about but really should!

Here are 25 of them!

Limit your time with Idiots. Life is way too short.

Do MORE of the things that bring you joy! And make sure you actually put those things on your calendar.

A few years back, I decided to walk my daughter to school each day. It was one on one time with her that I thoroughly enjoyed. Glad I did it because  that little girl is now a 21 year old woman! Life is funny that way, no?

Make sure you take the time to continue to date your significant other. My wife and I have been happily married 30 years because we never stopped dating. Work is important but my time with her is borrowed and will come to an end one day.

Make sure you’re home for at least one family meal each week. My kids are grown now and one lives away from home. We make it a point to have dinner together every Sunday.

Begin and end each day with gratitude. Each morning, before your two feet hit the ground, take a mental inventory of all you are grateful for. Can’t think of anything? Start with the fact that you woke up alive instead of dead like Bruce Willis in that f’d up movie The Sixth Sense.

Lose your ego long enough to ask top performers how they do it. I went from 60th to 12th (out of 350 reps) and took a sales team from 100th (out of 200 teams) to the top 5 by losing my ego and asking other people how they kick ass.

Don’t be so afraid of pissing people off. That doesn’t mean you should go out of your way to be a jerk, it means you shouldn’t be afraid of asking tough questions, having difficult discussions, and calling people out when appropriate.

Evict negativity (and negative people) from your life.

Stop watching the news in the morning. In their world, negativity sells, in yours it doesn’t.

Lose you ego and look in the mirror to assess your strengths and weaknesses. Then get to work on improving both.

Take more time to think quietly.

Don’t just conquer the world at work . . . conquer it at home too!

Know when its time to tell your ego to leave the room.

Time out! Did you notice how that was the third time I referenced your ego? Next to celebrities, sales people have the biggest egos on the planet.

Egos are important because they protect us from rejection and letting the BS get to us but;

They can also stand in the way of a learning moment!

Find opportunities to combine work and play. Put your beach chair in your trunk and make calls from the park. Do your admin work from a Starbucks. I do mine from a cigar lounge once a week.

Get hammered drunk before your team sales meeting. Just kidding! Wanted to see if you were paying attention!

Stop bringing your “work” home and “home” to work.

Stop checking your phone when you’re breaking bread with others. It can wait.

Laugh more.

Get something off your chest and then move on.

Deal with something you’ve been avoiding.

Get back to something you’ve given up along the way that you truly miss.

For me it was camping and the guitar. I now take 5-6 camping trips each year and my guitar playing has enabled me to tour with Bon jovi and White Snake. Not really, but it felt really good writing that!

Work harder at your personal relationships.

Don’t dwell on the stupid sh*t so much.

Find a way to give more. Could be a charity, food to your local food bank, blood, your time.

Take a few “What the hell” days. My college professor taught me this one. A “What the hell” day is when you get up to go to work, and you say “What the hell” and take that day for yourself. Watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for inspiration.

Be a little quicker to turn on your Spiritual GPS. Perhaps its time for you to reconcile with your creator?

There’s obviously lots more we could add to this list but;

I hope this at least gives you a good start!
