Every now and again, life has a way of delivering powerful messages via left hook. At least that’s how it played out for me one day in a Memphis airport.
My flight had been delayed so I moved to Plan B . . . my I-Pod so I could tune out all the pissed off travelers. Somewhere between Ozzy and VanHalen I caught sight of something that struck an emotional chord.
It was a young soldier (perhaps 18 or 19) who looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. I don’t know where he was going, but I felt him thinking about it. What a lonely moment.
It didn’t last long!
A young couple approached the soldier with a cup of coffee and sat down next to him and they were interrupted at least half a dozen times by people thanking this young man for his service. I guess whatever he was about to face made a delayed flight look like playtime.
Isn’t it funny how if we stop long enough and open our eyes, the true meaning of a set of circumstances appears?
I hope that will be the case for all of us today as we indulge in the beer, the bbq’s and the holiday weekend.
I ask that you remember those who have fallen so that we might enjoy the freedom we have today.
Wherever you are in the world today: Please raise your glass to honor them or offer a moment of silence
Oh and before I forget, I need to clear up some unfinished personal business. (talk amongst yourselves)
To my brother Michael Castain Navy Seal, Vietnam
To my brother Thomas Castain, USMC, Vietnam
and to my Dad Desmond Castain, USMC WWII
Thank you for your service your family is proud and grateful!
A toast to remembrance!
