A “clinger” is someone who clings to people.
Not in a freaky “you better back off before I get an order of protection” kind of way;
They cling to the same people at networking events.
They cling to the same people on their social networks.
Speaking of which;
Many times they resemble that relative that has to comment on EVERYTHING you post on Facebook.
They cling to the same people at company events and even . . .
The same parents at their kid’s sports games.
Why?
Because its safe!
People who have already accepted you typically won’t reject you;
unless of course . . . You cling too much!
But how does one deal with a “clinger” at a networking event?
Whenever I need to end a conversation at a networking event (with clingers and non clingers) I say;
(Name of person), I’ve really enjoyed chatting with you, I actually promised myself that I would get out of my comfort zone and try and meet a lot of new people today. Its really been a pleasure.
I then extend my hand (which is the universal sign for “We’re done here”) and I move on.
Simple, effective, and it doesn’t make the other person feel like you just left them cab fare on the night table.
So there you have it but before you go;
Are you a clinger?
