So did you hear the one about how everyone is sick of PowerPoint?
There’s even a nifty little phrase to hammer the sentiment home. . .
“Death by PowerPoint!”
Well maybe it isn’t the PowerPoint!
Maybe its . . .
This BS of putting these long mission statements or lengthy quotes up on a slide and then reading it to the audience at the same time they’re trying to read it.
That one kills mucho brain cells and its downright annoying! I mean what the hell is the point of putting something up there for me to read only to have you read it at the same time?
If you insist on doing that, then perhaps we all need to agree to read at the same pace.
Maybe its this business of having slides that are way too busy!
Instead, you could either subscribe to the 1-4-6 approach.
1 concept per slide
No more than 4 bullet points with . . .
No more than 6 words per bullet or . . .
Just put a really cool graphic up on the screen and get this . . .
Let your words, stories, humor etc bring it too life.
Take it from someone who continues to do quite a few keynote speeches . . . Its easier to remember 1 graphic than a butt load of words on a slide which often leads to . . .
Turning your back to the audience and reading something you should be able to recite.
And let’s stop blaming that poor PowerPoint for a lack of energy, excitement and enthusiasm and most of all . . .
Let’s stop giving that PowerPoint so much authority because at the end of the day WE’RE the message NOT the PowerPoint!
The PowerPoint’s job is to help cement the message.
So enough of this “Death by PowerPoint” nonsense . . .
I continue to use PowerPoints in just about all of my keynote speeches and onsite training events and I haven’t seen anyone drop dead as a result of PowerPoint exposure.
And should that day ever come, I might need to tell my ego to go wait in the car while I take full responsibility for a crap presentation.
Enough about me . . . What are your thoughts on this whole “Death by PowerPoint” thing?
Does a PowerPoint presentation still have its place in our arsenal?
