Do You Leave A Message Or Call Back?

Posted April 1, 2013

I’m conducting an informal poll today.

When you call a prospect and get their voice mail (never happens right?) . . .

do you leave a message or do you call back?

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts!

  1. Paul, I’m more likely to leave a message when calling someone. I believe in branding and this is one of the touch point that you can seed if you do it correctly. With our integration between the web and our CRM, I have become more targeted with the messages I leave. I’m able to touch on something that they have triggered on the site, giving more value to the message.

  2. If the call is truly cold (aside from my own research) I do not leave a message. If I have some insight or the call is from a referral I will leave a message referencing the insight or referral.

  3. Paul – I definitely leave a message. I believe it’s a good reason not to call back when someone doesn’t leave a message when they call me. My thought is whatever the reason they were calling wasn’t urgent enough or important enough for them to ask me for a return call or let me know they would be calling back. Leaving just enough to peak their interest to want to answer when you call back is key.

  4. Normally, I leave a message when I have something that’s really worth saying- if the lead is thoroughly researched and I’ve pin-pointed one of their needs, then I leave a message. If it’s a really, really cold-call, then I just try to call back.

  5. Both. I leave a message, state my intentions, tell them when to expect my next call and call back at the time I said I would. This shows my respect for their time and proves my follow through.

  6. I try to call a couple of times before I leave a message. My initial calls are at different times of the day/ days of week to see if they pick up. If I continue to get voicemails after two or three calls, I leave a message.

  7. For me depends on the urgency and/or importance of the topic. I typically don’t trust voicemail to get a reply. Ever have somebody call you back and they didn’t check the voicemail? Usually I will leave a voicemail if I need the customer to do some research before calling me back

  8. I’ll leave a message with my name and let them know I’ll give them a call back, “you seem to be busy at the moment”.

  9. I have been a message leaver. I’ve given it a good faith effort, but I don’t think it’s working. It’s a new month and based on some counsel, I’m going to stop leaving messages until the 4th attempt. We will see how it goes!

  10. I always leave a message. Given the fact that they know I called (thanks to caller id) I believe I need to express my reason for calling and why the should speak with me.

  11. I always leave a message the first time I call, but usually say something like, “This is Kory Cochran, sorry missed you, when you get this, call me at ____…

  12. I seldom leave a voicemail for a prospect, because my experience is that they never call back.

  13. I generally am prepared to leave a message. With Caller-ID and cell phones, everybody knows when they have a missed call. I think it’s just rude to hang up, without leaving a message! But that’s just me…

  14. Why leave a voice message when you can opt out w/ “0” to reach the operator/receptionist to ask about the person you are calling. You will get a lot of good info…they truly are away from the desk, in a meeting, on vacation, etc. Use this info to call back or reschedule an appropriate time. I use this a couple of times then resort to a voice message.

  15. I typically leave a message letting them know that I will call back. It helps them to know me a little bit so that when we do talk, it isn’t quite so ‘cold’.

  16. Try leaving half a message by “spontaneously” hanging up the phone mid sentence and they will CALL YOU back. Be sure to leave name and number at beginning of message!
