There was a time when I would have dismissed the idea of keeping a journal as some warm and fuzzy “Dear Diary” sh*t!
For the last 2 1/2 decades I’ve known better and today I want to share WHY I think its important for us sales folk to keep a journal.
First, it allows you to crystalize your thoughts. Depending on who you want to believe, human beings have somewhere between 60,00-90,000 thoughts each day.
Taking the time to slow down and get it on paper, can help you tremendously.
And speaking of “slow down”, I don’t know about you, but I write so much slower than I type, so the act of writing something down, forces me out of the 190 mph I typically running Castain Training Systems at.
It can help you systematically come up with options for a challenge.
It can help you systematically come up with options for opportunities.
The act of writing down and troubleshooting challenges/opportunities marks your path for the next time you encounter those things.
SUPER IMPORTANT EXAMPLE: In 2011, I documented my thought process for a major failure in trying to fill a training event. The result of taking the time to document each “thinking time” session was the creation of my “Rock Star University” initiative which has had over 8,000 graduates to date.
How can you learn from your “failures”?
Let’s not forget about things you’re doing right. When was the last time you flagged the things that helped you get in front of that difficult to reach prospect or close that deal that had a million different speed bumps?
It can be a great place to document things you learn along the way!
Note: I take notes (in my journal) when I read blogs, listen to podcasts, read and listen to books. I find that it helps me retain the information. I’ll also flag an action item so I’m not just consuming sh*t, I’m taking action on it!
Time Out (and be honest). If you read blogs like mine and consume other forms of sales content;
Are you actually taking action or are you just consuming information?
A journal is a great place to jot down your ideas as you get them. And since many of us AREN’T blessed with the ability to always get the answers they seek in one sitting;
A journal lets you know where you left off.
One more thing . . .
Keeping a journal keeps you in “Humble Student” mode and quite frankly, that’s where we ALL need to be in a profession that’s over-populated with “old dogs”, and people who feel they are above learning “new tricks”.
FYI . . .
I have a good 50 journal exercises that I’ve created just for sales reps.
