A few years back, I received an email from a client at 6:30 pm on a Friday.
I read the email and determined that it could wait until Monday morning.
On Saturday morning, at around 10:30 am, my client forwarded the same email to me with the old “???” which usually implies;
Hey dumb ass, how about a response?
I chose NOT to respond to that one too.
I know, choosing to actually have a weekend and spend time with one’s family is way out of line, right?
And no, I wasn’t trying to be a dick, but it really wasn’t important, and I WASN’T going to condition that behavior.
I emailed him back at 8:00 am and was promptly cut a new asshole for my lack of response.
I explained, respectfully, that I value my off hours time and that I reserve communication on the weekend for emergencies.
He didn’t like my response but we came to a professional understanding to “Agree to disagree”
A few months later, I received another email, this time on a Saturday morning, informing me that he was about to lose his job and could really use my guidance.
I didn’t email him back;
I picked up the phone and called!
Yep, on a Saturday morning!
He was shocked that I responded and reminded me of the conversation we had a few months earlier.
I reminded him that THIS was the type of emergency I was referring to and proceeded to help!
Here’s the moral of the story;
There are many reps who feel they MUST respond off hours.
I’m not one of them!
Time with my family is somewhat perishable and I can’t get that time back once it passes.
Life is also a tad too short!
My recharge time is vital so that I can continue to produce results for my clients.
So instead of responding to EVERY email that comes in after hours;
Or ignoring EVERY email;
I’m happy to respond when its urgent and;
Most of the time it ISN’T.
I’m saddened by the amount of people I see at local restaurants, having dinner with their family, taking a call with the old “I gotta take this”.
Actually, you probably DON’T!
Setting reasonable barriers with clients is important.
Having clients understand that is even MORE important.
I realize that some of you HAVE to be available at ALL times;
I also realize that sometimes this sh*t is totally unnecessary and even self imposed because we feel we have to.
You work hard on your client relationships;
Just make sure you work hard on your personal ones too!
