Have you ever stopped to think about WHY you procrastinate?
Typically, there are two reasons.
The first one comes to you courtesy of a 10 year study from Dr Piers Steel where he found that at the core of procrastination is a fear and even a disbelief that the task can be done.
Makes sense when you think about it; we’re afraid of rejection, failure, change etc so we often go out of our way with “busy work” as an avoidance.
The second comes from a 48 year study by Paul Castain where he found that you might not be scared, you might just have a lack of interest in the task. By the way, do you like the way Paul went all “3rd person” on ya back there? Any who, let me/him elaborate.
I hate doing expense reports. I have put them off for months at a time and have had “Mrs Uncle Paul” quite pissed off at me because I was owed amounts north of $8,000.00.
I’m pretty sure that at the core of this is NOT a fear of $8,000 but . . .
A pure hatred for expense reports and anything that that requires numbers, receipts and use of a side of my brain that has tumbleweeds and dust.
Sales is no different.
There are the things you might be avoiding because of fear and . . .
Things you avoid because you have zero interest in doing them.
You need to think about why YOU procrastinate and then make a decision . . .
Do you really need to be doing the task in the first place?
Time Out: I think facing your fears can be an unnecessary drain of energy and resources if the task is something you really don’t need to be doing.
Example: I wouldn’t say I have a fear of heights, I’m just not a big fan. So I guess I should “face my fears” and parachute or something? Hell no! Uncle Paul doesn’t have time for that! I have no plans of washing the outside of a window of the 17th floor anytime soon.
I see this with people who are under the impression that you have to cold call.
Says who?
If you can bring home the bacon another way (that you’ll actually do because you won’t avoid the task) I think you should go for it but . . .
You really do need to decide!
You’re losing an inordinate amount of time because you avoid things.
You’re results suffer because you avoid things!
Today is all about asking yourself “WHY?”
Important . . .
