Rethinking The Lemons To Lemonade Thing

Posted October 24, 2010

There’s nothing worse than getting a groin kick from life and then having someone regurgitate some positive thinking cliché ad nauseam.

You know:

“You gotta make the most of it”

“Somebody has a case of the ‘Mondays’” Note: I hope nobody actually says that but wasn’t that a cool scene in Office Space?

“You have to turn lemons into lemonade”

It took me the better part of my life to realize something about me and that statement that may or may not speak to who you are.

1)    When I hear that or think of that when I’m in fact, pissed, it elevates my pissiness because now I’m getting pissed that I’m not smiling and telling myself its gonna be ok.

2)    It can become an emotional avoidance technique because I sweep my emotions under the rug trying to squeeze some lemonade.

3)    I was mistaking “turning lemons into lemonade” as having to put up with something that I’m not willing to put up with.

And positive thinking aside, what if the next time life gave us lemons . . .

Instead of turning them into lemonade,

We get indignant and send them back?

If my memory serves me well

There was a time when (in the US) we had sweatshops and children falling asleep at machines until people became indignant and sent the lemons back.

Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus as if to say “hold these lemons while you’re standing dude. I didn’t order them.”

KFC Founder Colonel Sanders received his first retirement check and realized he couldn’t survive on such little income. He came up with the idea for KFC and then tried to send those lemons back. He was rejected 1009 times until someone said “Leave ‘em here”! Wish he would have rejected the lemons with that white suit he wore but you can’t have everything 🙂

People have changed the world over a refusal of the lemon!

So just to be clear:

No need to give the boss the finger or tell that annoying client to kiss off.

I’m just suggesting that when things are nice and comfy for you, your willingness to change is almost nil and . . .

What if

Frustration is in fact, the last milestone before we hit the threshold to change?

And with that knowledge, we celebrate that frustration then harness the energy to send the lemons back and change?

So maybe, just maybe, we don’t have to even keep those lousy lemons on our table after all or

We could search aimlessly for someone who received Tequila and salt from life and have a party!  🙂
