There was a really cool show on Thursday evenings back in the 80’s called “Cheers”.
It was a show about a bar “where everybody knows your name” as evidenced by everyone yelling out “Norm!” every time this one dude walked into the bar.
I believe that deep down, we all want something similar!
I’m not talking about “bar notoriety” . . . I’m talking about something deeper than that.
We all want to be acknowledged!
We all want to be heard!
Somehow my inner “Dr Phil” tells me it runs even deeper than that!
I believe we all seek the validation that we in fact exist . . .
in a noisy, busy and highly distracted world!
Today you are invited to stop, look and listen for opportunities to create “Norms” and then . . .
Confirm their existence by . . .
Being genuinely interested
Genuinely listening and . . .
Embracing your time with them in a manner that out cares the rest of the world!
Sadly, I don’t think you’ll have a tremendous amount of competition! Not because people are bad or evil . . . they’re simply too busy!
I believe you will get something back from it too but I’ll let you discover it on your own!
Peace!

I can genuinely say I create *Norms* on a daily basis with my clients.
Including my own coach I have two maybe three people that feed me my *Norm* fix on a regular basis.
By you writing this post, it simply validates what I do for a living.
Thank you Paul; you are unique and brilliant.
~ Steve
What a nice note Steve . . . Thank you. I really appreciate it!
I would like to be the Norm in every aspect of my life. I’m working on it. Thanks for the reminder, Paul.
MAAAARC . . . doesn’t sound as good as NOOOOORRRRRM but I bet to you it does 🙂
Thanks for stopping by Marc!
Great post Paul,

Thank you Peter.
Always appreciate your participation on the comments!
Paul – I anxiously await your posts to see what kind of pearls you will offer up each day and you’ve done it again today. So here’s offering up an imaginary glass of suds in salute to you on this fine Monday.
Thanks for the dose of humanity and hope your week is off to an excellent start.
I think you’ve hit the nail upon the head there – we do all seek validation and usually from external acknowledgements but others that say we exist in their eyes. We also follow this ‘norm’ by showing others we fit in, that we have the right clothes, car, job or even children – anything that get’s other to recognise that we have status – no matter how small. In many ways we are also seeking a way to be ‘normal’ – whatever that may mean and I spend a lot of time ‘normalising’ things for others through my work with the hysterectomy association – letting them know that they are doing just fine and that what they are feeling doesn’t make them odd as it’s a perfectly ‘normal’ experience. Being acknowledged and recognised as having a valid place in society is an important and often overlooked service we can do for others – so thank you for mentioning it, it always helps to be reminded.
Well thank you Linda and you are to be applauded for the level of care you are bringing to the folks you serve.
