When you coach and train for a living, you get a ringside seat seeing what others are doing to be successful.
Unfortunately, you get to see what people are doing to limit their success too!
I could give you a whole laundry list ranging from poor time management to procrastination but there is one that tops them all.
The old dog!
Not only do they refuse to learn a new trick, they love to tell the world something is basic or “Sales 101” and meanwhile . . .
They don’t even practice the very thing they flagged as basic!
Truth be told, after 30 years of selling, I have moments when my inner “Old Dog” tries to take over.
It might be when I am in the process of hearing about some sales technique for the umpteenth time or some tried and true practice that’s found it’s way into every sales book since the dawn of man.
Here’s how I know my inner “Old Dog” is trying to take over
I find myself saying “I know that” or “Thanks Captain Basic” “Everybody knows that” etc.
Here’s How I Put That Dog On A Leash . . .
Whenever I catch myself dismissing something because of it’s simplicity or simply because I heard it 10 million times, I ask myself a simple question . . .
“It’s great that you know this but; do you know this and you’re doing it or do you need to shut up and start doing it?”
We all know lot’s of things . . .
We’ve all heard it before but . . .
Actually DOING them is where the money is.
One more thing . . .
Stop looking for the big, sexy, sophisticated answers to your challenges . . .
You’ll rarely find them and . . .
You’ll typically pass hundreds of simpler things that your competitor refuses to do, because it’s easier to flag it as simple than to do the work that’s required.

oh, yeah, I know all of that. 🙂

Great article Paul. I see this happen more and more. Things change, sales techniques change. Buyers change. We need to remember what is successful, but also learn what is new and be willing to implement new strategies. Thanks!
“It’s great that you know this but; do you know this and you’re doing it or do you need to shut up and start doing it?” Classic. I try really hard to be the guy that shuts up and does it…but sometimes, I’m just the guy that knows it. Thanks, Uncle Paul!
Me too Jon We’re all a work in progress!
Thank YOU!
“Things change, sales techniques change. Buyers change. We need to remember what is successful, but also learn what is new and be willing to implement new strategies” Well said Joe!
Thank you!
