Let’s face it, sometimes, we experience what experts refer to as a sh*tty week.
Maybe a deal (or three) fell through
A client who seemed possessed by an evil spirit
Maybe the boss decided to make an example of you because you haven’t been turning in your TPS Reports?
But here you are, and it’s the weekend and you’ve brought it all home with you.
First, things first, deal with it!
And when I say “deal with it”, I don’t mean with any of that “turn that frown upside down” crap. Trying to be positive when you feel like punching a wall, is the equivalent of trying to sweep a pile of crap under the rug.
If you’re pissed off, upset, down, troubled, angry etc . . .
Say it!
Go scream into a pillow
Vent, get it out of your system, and then, get productive and do these 5 things.
- Ask Your Ego To Leave The Room. The salesperson’s ego has a job and it’s job is to protect us. The problem with that, is that it can’t tell the difference, between things that will hurt us emotionally, or valuable lessons that might initially hurt, but will ultimately help us grow. So go ahead and tell your ego to leave so you can regain control!
- Regain Control by asking yourself “What could I have done differently?” Now when you do this, you have to take on the mindset of a “humble student” looking for the lesson. And that’s why I told you to get the anger out first. You can’t find lessons when you’re angry . . .only excuses and things that make us feel like a victim. You can’t regain control when you’re busy feeling like a victim. Also, you need to look at the events of your week suspiciously, as in “There’s something here that I might be missing. What is it?”
- Take A Lesson From Your High School Math Teacher. Do you remember what your math teacher asked you to do when you took a test? Hand in your worksheets so he/she knew how the heck you came up with that atrocity of an answer. Actually, you probably did well on your math tests. Mine, were horrible and my worksheets contained doodles, song lyrics and the like but I digress. Have your journal handy and capture your thoughts. Capturing your thoughts allows you to go back understand your thought process. It also allows you to reinforce that “humble student” mentality. Oh, and here’s a little secret. Write down your thoughts as if you’re writing them to help someone else in the future. It will help you NOT to take all this stuff so personally.
- Get Excited And I don’t mean the angry kind of excited, I mean excited for an opportunity. Frustration (which I’m guessing has shown its ugly face while you’ve been struggling) is often the last stop before an idea or on a grander level, a breakthrough!
My most frustrating moment at Castain Training Systems
When I first hung out my shingle back in 2011, I tried to host a local event. That local event, would have brought in approximately $30,000 and would have carried me through the holidays (a time when sales training usually dwindles down considerably).
I had to cancel the event and to say I was frustrated, was a severe understatement.
That frustration forced me to think about what had happened and what I could have done differently.
And then it happened . . .
I came up with an idea . . .
Create online training programs!
That idea has resulted in 6,000 sales ranging from $99 to $695
Over $175,000 in onsite training from people who bought my programs and wanted me to come out and train their sales teams.
Over $80,000 in speaking fees
Over $50,000 in coaching
Forgive me for being smug, but do you think, I ended up by doing a tad better than the $30,000 I was hoping for when I first started?
And truth be told, I never would have done it if it hadn’t been for that “$30,000 Failure”
5) Set A Timer and either deal with your challenges in “bite sized pieces” or 1 big bite and then . . .
Get back to your life!
Don’t let it consume you.
Life is too short for that!
Oh, and one more thing . . .
If you’re annoyed/disappointed in some people who contributed to your sh*tty week, please understand that they probably aren’t spending a lot of time thinking about you right now.
Peace!
By the way . . .
