I listened to this on the way home today Paul. I admire you for being so open about your public speaking fears earlier in your career. You would never know it by how comfortable you are speaking today. You obviously worked very hard at it, and the results are very evident. I mentioned in another post of yours that I have struggled with a stutter most of my life. Although it still affects me today, it is much more under control than even 10 years ago.
My fear to speak is still there from time to time, but some of the techniques that you spoke of in this podcast will certainly help me going forward. I could write for hours on this topic, and certainly will at some point. I am starting my first Toastmasters club in a couple of weeks, and am so excited to take my public speaking to another level.
I just wanted to address one of the main points that you highlighted – being prepared.
This issue was never more evident than when I attended an international sales meeting for one company I worked for. Every sales rep and manager were in attendance from Canada, the US and Mexico. Some dude gets up in front of the group to promote his organization, and goes live on the internet to do a search through his company website. He enters our company’s name, and what do the top several results return – OUR MAIN COMPETITOR! Our CEO basically heckled him from the crowd, and it threw him off for the rest of the presentation. No matter how much the guy thought he was prepared, he still missed some critical research, and it lost him a lot of respect from our group.
