A Close Call With My Son

Posted May 10, 2013

I was  rushing to get things done so I could have lunch with my son when I received a phone call that no parent wants to get.

My son was involved in an accident.

Nobody was hurt and only minor scratches on both cars.

He was lucky but I couldn’t help but think things could have turned out differently.

I’m going to get a bit warm and fuzzy so please forgive me.

I tell my wife and kids that I love them at the end of most interactions.

I know (from some unfortunate life experiences) that the last time we see or speak to each other will most probably not be a scheduled event or on a time table that makes sense for all parties.

I just need to know that I savored our time together and told them how I feel about them.

On a related note . . .

I had been a tad annoyed with a business matter shortly before this happened.

Kind of made the business matter look like baby sh*t along side of this. 🙂

Peace!

  1. “I love you” are the last words out of my mouth at the end of my interactions with my wife and kids to. Glad to hear everyone was ok Paul.

  2. SO GLAD to know everyone is okay. Family means EVERYTHING to me, and I totally understand where you are coming from. Only someone who has received those phone calls can understand the panic you feel, the hairs standing on end, and how time literally stands still. BE HAPPY and tight hugs to you and your family Paul.

  3. I also say “I love you” at the end of interactions with family. I am proud to say it in any situation. To bring sales into the equation I am reminded of a saying on a sales manager’s wall years ago:
“What’s unsaid, what’s left untold, remains unsold!” I would rather not leave that one “on the table”. Very happy to hear that this ended well. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, grandmothers and those who act as mothers!

  4. Paul,

So glad that everything turned out to be alright. We humans don’t seem to grasp how fragile life really is. Tomorrow is guaranteed to no one. What’s past is past and the the future is not here yet…all we have is now…be grateful for every moment you get to spend with the people you love!

Give your son a big Hug Paul…and yea business can always wait!

    Cheers,
    Larry

  5. Happy that everything is fine. I know the feeling! I have four sons, and they are not too proud to give Mom and Dad a kiss when they see us, and we always say “I Love You” when we finish a call, or end a visit.

  6. Yeah – funny how life has a way of shining perspective on us when we need it…

Thank God he’s OK… of course as parents, that’s the most important thing of all…

I’ve learned from others who have not been so fortunate, to ALWAYS tell your family you love them before saying good-bye (be it in person, on the phone, in a text, etc.) and NEVER go to bed or hang up angry. Sadly, you just never know when you may not have another chance to say it or fix it.

Life and family are precious gifts and we should strive to always keep that in mind and be thankful for them and the time we have together. 🙂

Again – so glad to hear your son is safe – and good luck with the car repair stuff… hope it’s not too much of a drag! 🙂

    Have a great weekend!

    Virtually Yours,
    Anne-Marie

  7. Glad to know things were alright. My oldest (24) had her first fender bender this past winter and it was scary for her, a spin out on the NYS Thruway. But no one was hurt, and it was only her involved. The car is now fixed and she is wiser for it! The day could have been much worse, yes. Everything is a matter of perspective and it is so easy to lose it in the heat of a moment!

This goes for sales too. Our priorities are not our customers’. We have to make our priorities sync WITH our customers’!

    Regards,

  8. So glad everyone is unhurt. Brings back a memory of being the teenager in a similar situation. My Dad and I became closer and that teen rebel grew up a bit.
    Have a great weekend!

  9. I’m glad he is all right. Seems like pricey experience, no doubt. I hope he takes the best from this situation. He is lucky enough to have family like yours to go through such an uneasy moments. Best wishes!
