
I received a cold email (one of many I received that day) and it immediately caught my attention.
Subject Line: “Paul, check out this picture of us”
I open the email and there’s this silly, cut and paste, pic of me and the person who sent it.

Then he tied the subject line and picture together with the following text;
“You’re probably wondering why on earth I sent you this picture.
One: I know you get countless generic messages all the time, so I thought I’d stand out by trying to make you chuckle.
Two: This is a cold email, so I do have something to pitch you. You can leave now or give me 15 seconds to explain and then you decide.”
The rest doesn’t matter, because he already had my attention.
I’m not suggesting that this email should be utilized, verbatim;
I AM suggesting that you rip the tactic off!
The tactic is called a “Pattern Interrupt” which simply means doing something that breaks the typical pattern of cold outreach.
There are numerous ways to break someone’s pattern;
Ask a question
Say something completely unexpected.
Humor
Shocking statement
You can utilize “pattern interrupts” in any form of outreach but for today, I’d like for you to consider how you can utilize them in your cold calls and cold emails.
