I just came across another one of these ridiculous messages today that goes something like this;
While you’re playing, I’m hustling
“Hustling”, if you want to call it that, is a good thing.
Having a strong work ethic is an awesome thing but;
Thinking that you’re not allowed to “Play” or have any semblance of what experts refer to as “a life” is an irresponsible message being preached.
Don’t ever let anyone make you feel bad because you have a life outside of work.
Don’t ever let anyone make you feel bad because you value significant others and family.
While sales isn’t a 9-5 job . . .
It most certainly ISN’T a nonstop, 24/7 sprint!
In Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Habit #7 (Sharpen The Saw), is one that many people in sales miss entirely.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with that habit, imagine trying to cut with a saw, that hasn’t been sharpened in a while.
You’re not going to be as productive, as you would, had you taken the time to sharpen the saw, right?
The same goes for sales.
You need to take time to get smarter at it, learn new things, get new tools and you also need to take time to step back and recharge.
This is how we “sharpen our saw” in sales.
I’ve seen these “always hustling” types fizzle out real quick,much like the person who runs a marathon thinking that they can sprint the entire race.
I’ve seen them carry more baggage because of family problems, relationship problems etc because they were too busy conquering the world at work without putting in the same effort at home.
I can point to way too many people who are now populating cemeteries because they didn’t slow the hell down.
As someone who lost everything he had 21 years ago, and then rebuilt his life, I have a profound respect for money.
I also understand that someday, I’m going to cross a finish line with my career.
Now if I continue to work hard and grow Castain Training Systems, I’ll cross that finish line with quite a few bucks but;
If I continue to balance and blend work and play, I’ll cross that finish line with that money AND the things that matter most to me, fully intact.
So by all means get out there and outwork your slacking peers and competitors but;
Don’t ever let some over zealous asshole, tell you that you aren’t allowed to enjoy your life in the process!
