I’m assuming, unless you have some really good dirt on your prospects that you work hard for your sales.
Unfortunately, a sale isn’t always a indicative of a “til death do us part” union. We know this as sales people, I mean things happen, right?
But what about the client who files for divorce (or runs off with your competitor) because of someone on your team?
It might be the person answering the phone when they call.
The folks in customer service
Your boss
The technical dudes and dudettes
It might even be the marketing people pissing off your client by putting them on some mailing lists that carpet bombs their inbox several times per week.
Did I mention your boss?
True story (the rest are BS) Many years ago my boss (I shall call him “Tom” because that was his name) joined me to visit my client. He was visibly annoying the heck out of her and to top it off, she was having a bad day. He persisted because he wanted to school me in how to up sell an account.
Time Out: I was never told that going in. Not bueno in my book!
Finally my client told my boss “Look. My mind is mush today and I . . . “
She never finished the sentence because “Tom” interrupted with “You’re not helping me and you’re not helping yourself!”
It was in that moment that I believe my client either became possessed by the devil or channeled some ancient bad ass because the look she gave Tom was one were no words needed to be spoken but an understanding was reached.
I know this because I am quite convinced that Tom might have done a messy in his trousers from that look.
Fate intervened via an incoming phone call and I motioned to my client that Tom and I would be right back. Actually there is no motion for that so I think I might have just said something like “We’ll be right back”
I took Tom outside and was so angry that I took a swing at him. Not really but I verbally swung at him and told him to wait in the car while I went back in to apologize.
War stories from your crazy Uncle Paul aside . . .
