Do you ever get nervous when it comes to cold calling?
Well congrats for being human!
There’s a saying that many people are taught when they learn public speaking that goes something like this;
“The feeling of ‘butterflies’ in one’s stomach never completely goes away, but you CAN teach them to fly in formation”
Today, we’re going to talk about a few ways to get YOUR butterflies to fly in formation!
#1 If you get nervous, while cold calling, try Laughter!
Science (or maybe it was this rep I was talking to at the bar) tells us that’s its almost impossible to be nervous, immediately after peeing your pants.
Action: Create a comedy playlist of the funniest comics, and listen to it before picking up the phone.
This Next Suggestion ISN’T “HR Friendly” But;
If you want to change the way you look at the phone, and you’re not offended by REALLY bad language, check out The Jerky Boys.
The Jerky Boys used to make these absolutely hysterical prank phone calls and record them.
Listen to a few of their calls before making your calls and you’ll see the phone very differently and then;
Note the change in your demeanor.
#2 Warm up.
Both mentally and physically (as in the vocal chords) BEFORE picking up the phone.
Athletes and musicians do it and so should you!
Call your voicemail with your “pitch”
“Spar” with a teammate.
Say your “pitch” outloud to get the vocal chords going and people wondering why you’re talking to yourself.
#3 Hold a ceramic cup of warm water!
The warmth travels the nervous system and has a calming effect.
#4 Breathe!
Adrenaline kicks in when we get nervous and throws our breathing off.
It also does weird sh*t to the voice.
Combine them both and you hear yourself, huffing and puffing and talking in some voice like you’re possessed. I’m thinking that has a way of magnifying nervousness, no?
Focus on your breath and you get things back to neutral. Also, when you focus on the word “Breathe” you AREN’T focusing on being nervous 🙂
#5 Work on your phone chops!
We can talk about every trick in the book to conquer nerves, but one of the best things you can do, is to put in the work on your phone chops.
Put in the work
Learn new tactics and;
Watch what happens to your confidence.
And then understand, that;
People respond in kind
In other words, when you call relaxed, and in a great mood, its easier for a potential client to respond that way. The same theory applies when you call someone when you’re nervous and uptight.
