How To Improve Your Cold Email Response Rate

How many times have you sent a cold email with ZERO response from the recipient?

If you’re like most sales reps, the answer to that questions is;

“Most of the time!”

So how do you improve your cold email response rate?

Truth be told, there are lots of things you should be doing, but let’s break it down to a few simple things!

Make the email relevant to the recipient.

The way you do that is by taking a few minutes to do some basic research and hopefully identifying a Trigger Event.

Know that the subject line AND the preview text are the first line of defense!

The recipient of your email sends and receives north of 121 emails per day (Radicatti Group) and they consume 100,000 words of content (34 gigs) each day (University of California, San Diego).

That means they have a low tolerance for the irrelevant and they’ve gotten really good at sniffing it out FAST!

And this is why roughly 79% of our sales emails aren’t even opened (MailChimp, Constant Contact).

But how would they know your email sucks WITHOUT even opening it?

Your subject line and the preview text! That’s how!

Tip: Use your research to make the subject line about THEIR world. That’s one way to get their attention.

While you’re at it, use their name (when appropriate) in the subject line.

That brings us to the preview text.

The preview text (aka Preheader Text) is the tiny bit of text that appears in your inbox to give you a glimpse of the email without opening it.

So if you lead with something sh*tty and irrelevant, probably no need to open that email, right?

Here’s an example of how I leverage the power of the preview text.

Notice how the first sentence cuts off at just the right time?

The brain LOVES a good mystery and has a need to resolve things. That’s why you use the preview text to entice the reader, not disqualify yourself!

And that’s yet another reason why you should NEVER lead with something about you and your company!

Always lead with something about the recipient, their company, their competitors, their clients, their industry, their world.

How Many Characters Comprise The Preview Text?

It really depends on which email platform the recipient is using, if they’re viewing it on desktop or mobile device etc.

It can be anywhere from 35-140 characters.

My suggestion would be to plan for 140 characters so you’re covered across all bases.

But How Do You Get MORE Responses!

Simple, ask a question at the end of your email.

Humans (some aliens too I s’pose) have an almost reflexive impulse to answer a question;

Especially if the question is relevant and thought provoking!

So if you want MORE responses to your cold emails;

First, make sure it gets opened and read by making the email relevant;

Then ask a question at the end!
