The “Candy Cup Serenade”

Many years ago, I had the privilege of working with the #2 sales rep in a company with over 350 reps worldwide.

I noticed that at the end of each month, he had a bunch of company mugs filled with candy and beautifully wrapped.

Being the humble student I asked him about them.

He replied “You’re not familiar with the candy cup serenade Castain?”

He then explained that at the end of each month, he visits all the places where he has a pending deal.

His approach was simple;

Stop by

Ask to see his contact

Present them with the candy cup

Thank them again for considering us and;

Ask if there are any other questions or anything he can do to assist in their decision

Leave with a signed contract!

He explained that not only was there a certain “reciprocity” thing going on;

The average decision maker felt that as long as he was there, they could just go ahead and get this one off their plate.

The “Candy Cup Serenade” became one of many ways I would give prospects a gentle nudge.

The average sales rep DOESN’T have a well thought out communication plan that kicks in;

AFTER the proposal is submitted!
