The “Little Voice”

Posted May 8, 2011

I was listening to an interview with Sara Bareilles from back in 2006 where she was asked a rather direct question about the title of her upcoming album “Little Voice”. She was asked why she would call the album that when she certainly didn’t have a “little voice”

She explained that the phrase “little voice” became sort of her mantra throughout the recording process. Prior to recording that album, she had always considered herself sort of a pleaser and willing to accommodate others but it was starting to jeopardize her art.

It was at that point that she decided to listen to her “little voice” and get back to her opinions and thoughts and focus more on being authentic than on trying to please everyone.

While all of us have that little voice, I also believe that it has filters that are usually set to the default of “on”!

Today is simply about knowing the moment to turn off the filter and allow your little voice to lead you to your heart and then . . .

ACT!

And please be quick about it . . .

Our world hungers for those who package their “art” with a side order of “real”

  1. The ironic thing is that we all know very well what’s our little voice saying, we just choose to ignore it in most cases. Now, don’t get me wrong, sometimes it’s good to let that little voice rumble alone ’cause, you know, we all have to eat, but when you have the chance to listen to it and act upon it, ahhh, it sure feels good.

    1. Very true Gabriele . . . there’s a time and place to act on the little voice.

I agree about that feeling we get when we listen to it and I’ve been experiencing that very feeling ever since I listened to my little voice and launched my business a few months back!

      Thanks for stopping by Gabriele!

  2. Sometimes you come to realize that that litte voice is Jesus calmly speaking to you and directing you.

  3. It takes a whole load of training to hear your “little voice” consciously. This is specially useful in a sales situation where you are sometimes sitting in front of the client and discussing and the “little voice” is pointing you to something else ….

  5. Great comment Paul! The more you come from the heart the more your message will be accepted as a side order of real!

    Cheers,

  6. The act part is the serious part. I am involved with a number of practices to clear my mind and be able to recognize the little voice ( sometimes louder than others). Still, when I ask a question of the “big voice” and receive a direct answer, it is always tempting to wait for another answer that I think may suit me better. This tricky little evasion is my mind on it’s own deciding that the little voice is not as strong and compietent as the thick grey cloud of collected habits inside my head. Fine tuning is sometimes needed. A book I am reading refers to the two voices of distraction inside the head as goblins and chatterboxes. The true voice, the sacred little voice, is the one that has surprises for those other two, who are forever saying the same old things.

  8. Paul – Sometimes, I find myself wanting to please everyone, and in the end, I stifle my inner voice. And in sales, sometimes, your fear of losing the deal makes you ignore your inner voice, and instead, do “something” that isn’t beneficial and true to who you are.

I believe it as all about FEAR…
