You probably read the title of today’s post and thought I’d take this down the road of being selfish with your time,right?
Well, sort of but that’s not really where I’m going with this.
A few years ago, I decided that life was short and that I’d start doing MORE of the things that bring ME joy.
I made a huge decision to walk away from my position as a Vice President of a billion dollar a year printing company to start Castain Training Systems.
That was the BIG thing I did to bring joy in my life because that’s the dream I had been fighting since I got my ass kicked back in 1995 when I failed (in an EPIC fashion).
Since I talk an awful lot about that, I’d like to tell you about the “little” things that I decided to do, in the spirit of selfishness.
You might not agree with my choices, nor do you need to because when we’re being selfish, we simply don’t give a sh*t what others think.
1) I Got A Tattoo: A few years back, I had really wanted a tattoo and then made a really big mistake. I allowed someone to convince me that a tattoo “wasn’t me”. For 13 years, I allowed another person’s opinion to define me and that created a bit of an inner civil war for me because that’s not typically how I roll. So this year, for my 50th birthday, I did it. I love this tattoo and have received compliments on it, but, I really don’t care about the compliments, because, quite selfishly, I did it for me.
2) I Started Camping More . . . By Myself! For years, I screwed myself out of camping because of other people’s schedules. Today, I no longer wait for others, I go, by myself and quite frankly, I enjoy the solitude. I bring my guitar, I smoke cigars and I do a lot of reflection about a variety of things. This summer, I was the busiest I’ve ever been at Castain Training Systems and still managed to take 6 camping trips. Want to know the secret? I blended work with play! I did my coaching calls from my campsite for a few hours and then enjoyed the rest of my day. Talk about having cake and eating it too!
3) I Adopted A Pit Bull. We had been healing for a while after our last dog died back in 2013 and we thought it was time to start a new chapter. “Allie” is a beautiful dog who had been abused. She keeps me company on those days when I am home and likes to pull up a chair next to me when I sit by the fire.
4) Daily “Thinking Time” I enjoy sitting quietly each evening (while traveling) by the hotel pool or on the balcony with an awesome view. In the past, I’d be so busy running, that I wouldn’t slow down to enjoy it. When I’m home, you’ll find me having a cigar on the patio or by the fire pit. During this time, I think through various things from how I’m going to close a deal to a new program I want to launch. Sometimes, I grow balls and think about the things that scare me that I need to face and other times, I reflect on my life and how blessed I truly am.
5) I Got Back To Seriously Studying Guitar. I reunited with my old guitar teacher and I now keep my guitar next to my desk. I pick it up as a reward after I finish a cluster of phone calls.
So why do I think selfishness leads to more sales? Simple, because;
In sales, to REALLY succeed at it, you can’t be selfish. Unfortunately, it’s hard NOT to be selfish when you never do anything for YOU!
I see this as very similar to the in flight safety announcement, when they tell you to get your own oxygen situated, before helping someone else with theirs.
Does this make sense?
Then, perhaps YOU need to get a bit selfish too?
