According to studies conducted by both ConstantContact and MailChimp, the average open rate for a cold email is between 14% to 23% depending on the industry.
Kind of sucky, no?
Here’s part of the reason why;
According to Convince and Convert, over a third of email recipients decide to click on email based solely on the subject line.
The other reason has to do with the preview text, but we’ll save that discussion for another day.
So here’s the million dollar question;
What can you do to capture someone’s attention in the subject line without having to become a professional copywriter?
Start by making it relevant to the recipient.
How do you do that?
Talk about something that they care about (Hint: it isn’t your company, widget, etc);
It should be something about them, their company, their challenges, their opportunities, their industry, etc.
The subject line, needs to show that there’s value in the email you want them to open!
The other thing you can do (in conjunction with leading with value is;
Use the recipient’s name in the subject line.
NEVER underestimate the power of using someone’s name, I mean, haven’t we all responded to the sound of our own name since we were born?
You can also use a “pattern interrupt” in the subject line by using a compelling question, using tasteful humor, and if you’re really careful;
A shocking statement!
So go back and take a look at your cold emails and make sure your subject line is all about the recipient;
And not YOU and your widget!
