Whenever I train groups of sales people, I ask a simple question.
“How do you typically approach a potential client?“
The responses include things like;
“I prefer the phone.”
“I prefer email.”
“I prefer LinkedIn”
Etc, etc!
The problem with those responses lies in the;
“I prefer” part because;
Your potential client DOESN’T care about what you prefer;
They’re too busy caring about what THEY prefer!
Might seem like some “warm and fuzzy” nonsense, until;
You’re so busy clinging to that ONE form of outreach that YOU prefer;
That you get ignored because your potential client doesn’t like to communicate that way.
Example;
Let’s say YOU prefer generating opportunities via networking events but;
There are potential clients who think networking events are a waste of time and therefore DON’T go;
You lose!
Meanwhile, they like the phone and email etc and;
Your competitor approaches them there;
Who do you think is going to make an impression?
So by all means, diversify your outreach, and;
Stop doing what YOU prefer;
It was never about YOU!
