Gratitude . . . 2 Feet At A Time!

Posted September 21, 2011

For the longest time I’ve heard motivational speakers talk about the benefits of beginning each day with gratitude.

In fact, I’ve heard it so many times that I usually forget to do it each day.

That changed for me a few weeks ago when I came across a cool way to remember to do this.

Each morning when my feet hit the floor . . . I say “Thank You”

Why?

Well for starters, each day when my feet hit the floor it means I have another chance, another “at bat”

Besides . . . experts tell me waking up dead sucks!

So once I say “Thank You” I start going down the list of everything I am grateful for.

Another chance to put that ding in the universe

Marrying my High School sweetheart.

Great kids

Etc.

I must confess that I give it my utmost with the goal of working myself into a freakin frenzy  . . . Of Gratitude!

It doesn’t have to be some monumental thing in your life  . . . it could be anything . . . like the fact that I could watch the sunrise without seeing my neighbor outside smoking a cigarette in her pajamas.

Depending on which expert you choose to believe, they say we have anywhere from 60,000 – 90,000 thoughts each day . . .

Perhaps this is a way for us to take control of our very first thoughts each day  . .

2 feet at a time!

Peace!

  1. Showing gratefullness is important not just because it puts you in a good mindset, it also makes you kinder to others and makes them more gratefull of you.

Starting the day with “Thank you” makes it easier to say thank you during the day.

  2. Paul, counting your blessings is a game changer. The world is filled with people busy cataloguing hurts, hates and wrongs…what a self defeating waste of time. I love Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

  3. I start my day focused on 6 habits and the first is Gratitude. Would you like to get more out of that habit? Write it down. Those that record these thoughts exercise more, are healthier, feel better about their lives, and are more optimistic about the coming week. They were also more likely to make progress towards their goals. Writing down what you’re thankful for converts to revenue.

  4. Thank you , thank you for sharing — I think I’ll add a thank you for you each morning when I start my day.

  5. I like this !! I am gonna try remembering it every morning !! Thank you Paul, we all have got many many things to say “thank you” to, indeed. Thank you!

  6. Paul,

Such a simple and elegant solution! Thank you!

I’ve been thinking (not too hard apparently) about how to do this on a consistent basis without making a big production out of it.

    Thanks again,

    Marie Watkins

  7. Reminds me of one of my favorite Zig Ziglar quotes – “Every day is a great day, just try missing one”!

  8. Knowing what it is for which you are grateful is the key. I have six core principals for my life; I developed them 25 years ago at age 27, when a major incident in my life compelled me to think about my life and its value.

    1. Always be generous.
    2. Always be grateful… at 4:20 a.m. every morning I wake naturally from my sleep, and most days the person I love more than life itself is sleeping peacefully next to me. I give thanks. I then give thanks for the fact that my day is made already by RJS’ presence, and every good thing that will happen henceforth is a bonus. I give thanks throughout the day for all the good things that happen, and while I’m not particularly wealthy in financial terms, my life is full of riches and richness.
    3. Live with intention.
    4. Take action on purpose.
    5. Say yes, and commit…
    OR
    6. Say no, and commit… if no is the best answer for me, it’s invariably the best answer for all concerned, as an uncommitted or shaky yes will likely result in abject failure or debilitating stress.

  9. Won’t even wonder how many would need to do a 180 to make this happen in their lives. Starting the day with a positive note. One step closer to success.

  10. Morning Paul,

The “Attitude for Gratitude” will always start your day on the right foot…or maybe both feet 😉

Thanks for inspirational post my friend!

    Regards,
    Larry

  11. Not only is it the perfect way to begin the day, it is also the perfect way to end the day. There have been so many nights that I counldn’t go to sleep because my mind was wrapped up in worry (imagine that – a small business owner worried!). Now when that happens I just start thinking of the things for which I’m grateful. Typically, I am fast asleep before I can come up with 50 things. Much better then sleeping pills!
