"Should I Pay For Referrals?"

Dean sent me an interesting question with regard to referrals.

Paul,

I’ve been enjoying all your posts on referrals lately and have a question for you. Should we compensate people who send referrals our way?

This is an interesting question because on one hand, we want to encourage referrals, on the other hand, we don’t want to violate a company’s policy on gifting, or even insult the person with a monetary gesture.

So my first piece of advice is to be careful and put some thought into it because;

You can always COMPENSATE without a monetary reward.

Some ideas to consider;

Send along a food item but include this person’s team.

Offer some kind of upgrade, extra or bonus on their next order.

Send along a product, or offer a service for free.

Note: My web designers gave me a free month of internet hosting for referring a client to them.

Offer some free training like a “lunch and learn”, a webinar etc but include this person’s team.

Host a dinner/lunch so your clients can enjoy a night out and networking with their peers.

Host an exclusive “mastermind event” where they can not only network with their peers, they can brainstorm as well.

Create some kind of fun, but yet inexpensive kit that you send to people when they refer you.

Invite them to an industry event.

Use a service like SendOut cards to personalize a Thank You card with graphics and call outs.

Refer business back to them!

And let’s not forget that one of the best ways to compensate someone who refers us is;

To make them look like a rock star by doing such an amazing job, that it solidifies their relationship with the person they referred to us
