Changing How You Feel About Cold Calling (And Prospecting In General)

I once had an evil genius as a mentor.

He suggested that I set a 30 day goal of cold calling several times each week, for a certain amount of time.

He sensed my hesitation (which wasn’t hard since I told him it wasn’t for me).

He told me to decide on a reward I would give myself at the end of the month;

Even if I failed miserably at the task at hand.

So I decided on a “date night” with my wife.

For the next month, every time I’d hesitate to pick up the phone, I’d think of that “date night” that might not happen.

Every time, I picked up the phone, I told myself I was another step closer to hitting my goal.

Once I accomplished the goal, we went into NYC and had an amazing dinner in “Little Italy”.

I went back to my mentor, pumped, excited, and feeling really good that I not only did something I didn’t really like to do;

I did it for 30 f*cking days!

He confessed that he suggested it to help me change the way I viewed cold calling, and;

It worked!

I took this simple lesson and did other things to change the way I viewed cold calling (and prospecting in general).

  1. I created a print out that I keep by my phone that reminds me that EVERYDAY there are scenarios where the person I’m approaching would absolutely welcome my call! You can print out a FREE copy to keep by your phone by clicking HERE.
  2. I bought a collage picture frame and filled it with all the things I’m working for from the charities I support, to the cruise I want to take with my wife. I keep right by the phone as a reminder to tell fear to kiss my ass!
  3. I listen to comedy before and immediately after making cold calls. It helps me stay in a fun, funny mood. Also, it’s hard to be nervous and uptight right after you laughed your ass off.
  4. Sometimes I listen to a playlist I created of all my favorite songs. Music can dramatically change your emotional state. Doing this before and immediately after prospecting changes how you feel about it.
  5. Do it in small increments. I advise my coaching clients to call in 25 minute call bursts. Why? Because if you’re not a fan of cold calling, taking it in 25 minute increments is more emotionally manageable.

Beware Of Idiots Who Will Make Fun Of You For Doing This

My coworkers used to make fun of me for having a picture of The Magic Kingdom on my desk.

It was all in fun but still, they were relentless.

When I explained that the picture represented a dream vacation I wanted to take my family on, one dummy responded;

“Well I guess if you need something like that to motivate you, then, whatever.”

I told him to hold a sec and I made believe I was looked for something.

Then I stopped and looked at him and said;

“I just checked and I still don’t give a sh*t what you think” and I just kept being me.

So think about how you can change your association with cold calling and;

Wear it loud and proud and FREE of you giving a sh*t what your coworkers think!
