“How can I increase my referrals?” is a question you should be asking yourself often.
Why?
Because referrals are your low hanging fruit and;
They typically close faster;
Kind of timely considering we’re rapidly approaching year end!
There are 3 things to think about when it comes to generating MORE referrals.
Have a Plan and if you think that’s overkill then I promise you that you’ve been oversimplifying it. “Winging it” in sales is never a good thing.
Your plan should include WHO you will ask, HOW you will ask Note: You might think that all you have to do is ask but, there’s actually a way that I’ve perfected that doubles and triples the amount of referrals you can get. It’s actually one simple sentence that you tag on when you ask.
Your plan should also include a “communication map” detailing different ways to keep the idea of referring you top of mind. You do know that you need to embrace repetition when it comes to asking, right?
Don’t Limit Your Plan To Clients Only. If you’ve been listening to my podcast lately, you’ve heard me talk about how I went from 60th to 12th our of 345 sales reps. I modeled the #1 rep (who nailed the top spot two consecutive years). He told me his “secret” was asking for referrals from prospects. I struggled with this one at first but then I couldn’t come up with a compelling reason NOT to ask prospects.
Sometimes we allow ourselves to operate within limiting constructs and then we have the realization that we’re the idiot that created the construct via our overly cautious belief system.
I started asking prospects for referrals 20 years ago and it has meant hundreds of thousands of dollars in commissions that would have been left on the table.
Don’t Feel So Damn Weird About Asking! Sales reps tell me they hesitate (and even completely avoid) asking for referrals because they feel like they’re begging, coming across desperate and just weird, and yet, they have the balls to cold call strangers. Please take a moment to ponder how silly that is.
The good news is that if you’ve taken the time to create a plan, perhaps you won’t feel so silly.
So your mission today is to think about how you can kick your referral efforts up a notch between now and year end!
