Instead Of “Handling Objections” Try Avoiding Them!

Posted November 8, 2019

There’s a lot of content out there on how one should “handle” objections.

That’s fine, and it never hurts to have responses to common objections, but;

Perhaps we’re missing the part where the objection is actually a symptom of a much BIGGER challenge;

Failure to avoid the objection in the first place!

I mean, we can talk cute rebuttals all day long but if we aren’t treating the root cause, we’re being incredibly ineffective!

There’s advice in sales, that we roll our eyes when we hear it;

Because we’ve heard it a million times!

I’m about to induce an eye roll with you;

Tape your end of your cold calls and review your “Game Tape”!

Listen to the actual words you use AND the way you delivered them.

Do you sound confident?

Competent?

Could you have made some of your points in a more convincing way?

Did you do anything that brought on skepticism, doubt, and objections? Did your “script” lack the substance needed to avoid skepticism, doubt, and objections?

Did you interrupt?

Was there a point in that call where you lost control? If so, in what ways could you have maintained and/or regained control?

Could you have asked BETTER questions?

Listened more?

Perhaps you interrupted?

Did you miss something you shouldn’t have?

How about filler words like “You know” “Um” “Basically”. I’m a recovering “Youknowaholic” by the way.

What went well?

What could you have done better?

In what ways would go about this call differently if you were given a “Do-over”?
