The Most Important Objective When You Send Cold Emails

Posted September 11, 2024

Metallica got it right when they said “And nothing else matters”!

In fact, I’d like for you to welcome that phrase as your reminder of THE most important objective when sending a cold email;

Getting the recipient to open the email.

And just in case you think that’s a stupid piece of advice, I’d invite you to take a look at;

Your Subject Line: Too many SDRs are using the same subject lines and therefore, decision-makers flag the email as spam (we’ll get back to that in a second).

I’m seeing too many “Quick Question” subject lines, (their company name and your company name) subject lines that instantly make the email reek of a sales pitch, etc.

According to research from Convince and Convert, 69% of spam is reported based on the subject line. When your domain gets enough of those, your deliverability is screwed going forward.

The Preview Text: The preview text consists of a 90 (ish) character preview of the first line of your email.

Many refer to the preview text as “the second subject line” because it generally reveals what the flavor of that email is going to be.

Most SDRs “telegraph their punches” here as well, resulting in the recipient trashing the email without ever opening it.

The key is to make both the subject line and the preview text about the recipient (not your solution).

Show, immediately that it’s relevant.

Oh, and according to both Constant Contact and Mailchimp, 60-80 percent of our cold emails aren’t even opened, so;

If you start to focus on those two areas and build from there;

You will see a dramatic improvement.

One more thing;

I have 10 Subject Line Tactics and 10 Preview Text “Hooks” that should get you moving in the proper direction right quick!
