A few weeks back, I heard myself making an excuse as to why I wasn’t heading back to the gym and getting back on a weight loss program.
My excuse was the classic”I’ll start next week because this week (insert dumb excuse here)”
Then something really special happened . . .
I realized that for 2 years and 3 months, I had been “next weeking” my fat ass away from a healthier life.
Dr Piers Steel tells us that we procrastinate because we’re afraid, and lack the belief, that we can complete the task at hand.
So we feed ourselves (and those around us) convenient excuses.
We embrace avoidance activities so we can avoid dealing with things.
It’s like prospecting for new business.
Many of you are afraid of picking up the phone so you . . .
Keep your “servicing my existing clients” cap on
Spend inordinate amounts of time on admin
Spend inordinate amounts of time in your plant
These are all avoidance activities.
But avoidance activities are lonely and need the companionship of justification (aka EXCUSES)
“If I spend my time hunting for new business my existing accounts suffer”
“If I don’t continually babysit my projects the team here will mess it up”
“I’m too busy to prospect for new business”
All of these things are safe and they allow you to avoid the bigger issue . . .
Understanding why you are scared and then making a decision to face that fear;
Armed with a plan to beat it’s ass!
What are you scared of?
And if I’m willing to call bullsh*t on the dumb lies I’ve been telling myself in front of 30,000 subscribers;
Perhaps you can do the same in a much needed heart to heart with yourself?
And if I can ever be of help, click HERE to learn about my 1 on 1 coaching programs.
And for those of you who just responded to that with “I’ll contact Paul next week, month, early next year”;
You’re procrastinating again!
